Scope & Content:

Correspondence and papers of Sir John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (b. 1751, d. 1838), Solicitor-General 1788-1793, Attorney-General 1793-1801, Lord Chancellor 1801-1827. Many of the papers were used by Horace Twiss (b. 1787, d. 1849) in his biography of Eldon, The Public and Private Life of Lord Chancellor Eldon (1844), and carry annotations by Twiss himself or by John Scott, 2nd Earl of Eldon (b. 1805, d. 1854), who arranged and transcribed many of the papers, dated many of the undated letters, and selected material for inclusion in the biography. Purchased from the Scott family of Encombe, April 2002, and incorporated November 2006.
