Title:

Anderson Papers. Correspondence and papers of David Anderson (1751-1825) and his brother Lieut. James Anderson (1758-1833), both of the East India Company; 1767-1824, with some later letters and notes concerning the Anderson family history, bef. 1944. David Anderson was closely associated with the administration of Warren Hastings as Governor-General of Bengal, rose to become President of the Council of Revenue, 1780-1785, and concluded the Treaty of Salbai which ended the First Maratha War in 1782. James Anderson was A.D.C and confidential agent to Hastings; for their further correspondence, see Hastings’ archive, Add. MSS 29142-29201 passim. This portion of the Anderson Papers supplements those in Add. MSS 45417-45441, presented to the British Museum in 1939 by David Anderson’s descendant, Capt. D. M. Anderson (1867-1944), of the 8^th King’s Royal Irish Hussars, whose letters and notes concerning the family history are in Add. MSS 82694-82695 below. Purchased at Lyon and Turnbull, Edinburgh, 11 July 2006, lot 280.
