CORRESPONDENCE, ETC., OF EDWARD JOHNSTON (b. 1872, d. 1944), calligrapher; 1904-1923. Most of the papers relate to the Society of Calligraphers, of which Johnston was President from 1906 to 1910. Other contents include a draft of a testimonial by Johnston on behalf of Eric Gill, recommending him as ‘in every way fitted to conduct a class in Inscription cutting and monumental masonry’, 1905; and a rough sketch of a calligraphic address commissioned by William Rothenstein and written by Johnston for presentation to Count Harry Kessler, 1908. Correspondents include Eric Gill (ff 1-2, 20-21, 23, 28-30, 40-41, 44-47), Graily Hewitt (ff 4, 10), Anna Simons (ff 24-25), Percy J. Smith (f. 13) and Thomas Carmichael, Baron Carmichael (ff 48-50). The collection belonged to Stuart B. Schimmel (Christie’s New York, 17 May 1991, lot 97) and subsequently to the type designer George Abrams. Purchased from Maggs Bros Ltd, Feb. 2007.
