Materials: Parchment.
Dimensions: 240 x 170 mm (text space: 170 x 125 mm).
Foliation: iii + 123 (f. i is a parchment title label pasted on the back cover of the binding; f. ii is a parchment flyleaf at the beginning, and f. iii is a paper bookplate pasted on f. ii).
Collation: i-xv8 (ff. 1-120); xvi4-1 (ff. 121-123; 1 leaf cancelled at the end). Catchwords and quire signatures.
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Original 12th-century binding of panelled red-brown leather over bevelled wooden boards, tooled in blind within a ruled framework: the front cover with an outer border formed by the repeated use of two tools with birds, and an inner border of two foliate tools, central compartment with four registers with the double impression of a stag (top and bottom), St Peter and flower heads at all interstices; the back cover with outer border with the repeated use of tools with Luke's winged ox and a bird beneath an angle, an inner border with a two-headed grotesque and a prancing deer, central compartment with two vertical tendrils, flower heads at interstices, remnant of one strap (small losses of leather at upper front joint and top edge of front cover and from centre of back cover, outer corners very slightly worn, six tiny wormholes in front cover and one in back, lacking two clasps and pins and upper spine tab). Parchment label on back cover with the title De mistica exposic[i]o[n]e sacrificiorum' in black ink and paper pressmark label '413' at the head of the spine.

Origin: Austria, Styria (Admont).
Provenance:
The Benedictine abbey, Admont, Austria: a title label on the lower cover reading 'De mistica expositione sacrificiorum' (f. i recto), and a paper pressmark label '413' on the spine: identified with the 'Liber de misticacione oblacionum', incipit 'Secretum dei', in the 1370 inventory of the abbey (see Wichner 1889).
Ernst Philip Goldschmidt (b. 1887, d. 1954), antiquarian bookseller, London: purchased by Maggs Bros for £360 at his sale, Sotheby's, 11 December 1935, lot 567, and described as a manuscript ‘from a celebrated monastic library in Central Europe’.
John Henry Montagu Manners (d. 1886, d. 1940), 9th duke of Rutland: his bookplate (f. iii recto pasted on f. ii recto), and signed note recording purchase on his behalf by Maggs Bros: 'Bought for John 9th Duke of Rutland by Messrs Maggs Bros of Conduit Street at Sale at Sotheby's Dec 11th 1935 Lot 567. It came from the monastic Library of Admont in Styria, Central Europe. Rutland, Belvoir Dec 1935' (f. ii recto); placed on loan at the British Library in December 2005; accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the British Library in 2006.
