Cartulary of Rufford Abbey
- Scope & Content:
-
Cartulary of Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire, arranged topographically in sections and compiled in two stages:
(a) 1st half of the 15th century (ff. 17-103);
(b) 2nd half of the 15th century (ff. 1-16).
Rufford Abbey was founded for Cistercian monks in 1146, being colonized from Rievaulx Abbey (Yorkshire), and was dissolved in 1536.
The first two quires (ff. 1-16) contain copies of royal, baronial and other charters, added to the manuscript in 1471 by Abbot John Lilly (1462-circa 1473): 'Hic incipit Registerium compilatum a dompno Johanne Lyle abbate monasterii beate Marie de Ruffordia anno domini millesimo cccco lxxio de cartis siue munimentis prefato monasterio concernentibus' (f. 1r). Contemporary inscription 'Liber sancte Marie de Ruffordie' (f. 1r).
A 17th-century transcription is in Harley MS 1063.
