James Augustus St John (b..1795, d.1875): Journal; 1821-1822. Autograph, headed `Memoires d’un Philosophe, ecrites par luimeme, Commence le 27th de Mai 1821’, but not otherwise in French, and closely written on 60 numbered pages. St John, who was born James John, son of a shoemaker of Laugharne, was in his early life involved in radical politics and journalism. In later life he moved on to literary work and mainstream political journalism and travelled in Europe and the Middle East. The journal includes accounts of his reading and programme of self education. At the end, reversing the volume is a list on 14 unnumbered pages of his books, with prices. St John is the subject of an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which cites the present volume. Donated to the British Library, July 2007.
