Title:

Kathleen Raine: letters to George Every (b.1909, d.2003), theologian, poet and literary critic, from Kathleen Raine (b.1908, d.2003); 15 Dec.1945-1970. Autograph. Together with autograph poem ‘Isis Wanderer’ by Kathleen Raine, first published in The Pythoness, and other poems (1949) with typewritten copy. The letters centre on discussion of theology and religious beliefs, and poetry, predominantly their own. One letter (ff. 15-16) outlines Katherine Raine’s opinions on William Blake, with particular regard to religion, in response to questions from George Every. Also includes an autograph explanatory note about the dating of the letters written by George Every (f. 1). For further correspondence and writings by Kathleen Raine, see Add. 80783, Add. 74780, Add. 73538. Presented in March 2007 by Brian Keeble, literary executor of the estate of Katherine Raine, who received the letters from Bernard Hamilton, executor of George Every’s estate, who felt “that they should be kept with the rest of Kathleen Raine’s papers”.
