Hugo Manning Papers

83982-83998. Literary manuscripts of Hugo Manning, poet, journalist and mystic, (b.1913, d.1977); 1936-1977. Manning was born Lazarus Perkoff, and worked as a journalist in Vienna in 1937, and then in Argentina from 1938 to 1942. Between 1946 and 1968 he was on the staff at Reuters, becoming a senior sub-editor and features writer, and in 1948 became a Poetry Editor of the New Statesman. From 1968, he devoted his time to poetry and writing. In the early 1970s, he was Jeffrey Kwintner's adviser at the Village Book Shop, where he was poet in residence. He was also involved with publishing, at the Village Press and other specialist publishers, including the Poetry Press, and the Enitharmon Press. The collection includes typescripts of a bibliography of his works by Philip J. Coram, 1983, and of the published biography, Hugo Manning, Poet and Humanist, by Ivan Savidge, 1996. Presented by Dr. Judith Attfield, of Winchester, Hants., niece of Hugo Manning,via Bloomsbury Book Auctions, Nov. 2003.
