Title (f. 1) 'Raggionamento fra due cittadini di Genova[quan]do fu presa la Corsica con un bellissimo discorso sopra il governo del Rep[ubli]ca Genovese'. Armorial bookplate of Frederick North with shelfmark 'L/19/D' (front pastedown). '36/10' in pencil in upper right corner of armorial bookplate. Formerly Phillipps MS. 4985, trace of Phillipps shelfmark on lower spine. Purchased, together with Add. 79518, 79519, 79520 and 79521 from Finarte Semenzato Auction House, Venice, 5 May 2003.
Paper; ff. ii + 127. 158 x 226mm. Two 16th-cent. hands. Binding of quarter vellum with orange and brown marbled paper covers with gilt-tooled spine.
1. ff. 1-3v. Prologue. [italics]Inc.[/italics] 'A me pare quando riguarde nelle cose passate et l’actioni de gli antichi alla memoria mi riduco che felici siano stati coloro'.
2. ff. 4-73v. 'Ragionamento fatto tra Princivalle et Ansaldo', anonymous account of the capture of Corsica by the French in 1553, the ensuing war fought between Genoa and France and the Corsican revolt against Genoese rule in 1564, led by Sampiero Corso, a nobleman supported by France and Constantinople; written in the style of a discourse between Princivalle and Ansaldo, two citizens of Genoa; circa 1575. Inc. ‘P[rincivalle]. Si che aquello che mi dite voi haveste poca speranza della ricuperatione della Corsica per Genovesi', exp. 'pensiamo sopra quanto di che a raggionare habbiamo preposto A[nsaldo], cosipare anche a me'.
3. f.74-127. 'Discorso sul governo della Republica di Genova', anonymous discourse on the government of Genoa; circa 1575. Inc. ‘Havendo nel superior libro disputato della nobilitá comparandola agli huomini nuovi’, exp. ‘ma dicolo per alcuno ambitioso o seditioso il equivale volesse assaltare il palazzo’.
