JAY TREATY: list of papers related to 277 captured naval vessels prepared in accordance with the treaty negotiated by John Jay and Lord Grenville between the United States of America and Great Britain; 1794-1795. Signed by Samuel Bayard and John Trumbull. The treaty, which exacerbated the divisions between the Federalists and the nascent Republican party (who believed it offered too many concessions to Britain), preserved peace between Britain and America until 1812 and provided the basis for American economic prosperity. It has also formed a legal precedent for the arbitration of international disputes. Jay’s subsequent correspondence with Lord Grenville is at Add. MS. 59049, f. 1-102v. Related papers are held by The National Archives (formerly known as the Public Record Office). See Samuel Flagg Bemis, Jay’s Treaty: a study in commerce and diplomacy, rev. ed. (New Haven, Conn., 1962) and Jerald A. Combs, The Jay Treaty. Political battleground of the Founding Fathers (Berkeley, Los Angeles & London, 1970). The John Jay Papers and related papers held by Columbia University, N.Y, and other institutions, including The National Archives, London, are available electronically at [http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/eresources/archives/jay/] January 2004. Presented by the American Trust for the British Library, January 2002.
