This manuscript contains a calendar and obituary calendar compiled for the Benedictine Abbey of Schmerlenbach in Bavaria, Germany. Obituary calendars were liturgical calendars that recorded the death anniversaries of a religious house’s former members, patrons, and other local figures.
Contents:
f. 1r: added notices of deaths from the 16th and 17th centuries, the latest for the year 1685.
ff. 1v-7r: a calendar, featuring notices of deaths added in the 17th-century (ff. 1v, 2r).
f. 7v: added notices of deaths for the years 1680 and 1681.
ff. 8r-22r: an obituary calendar of the Abbey of Schmerlenbach, compiled in the 13th century, featuring later additions up to the year 1674.
f. 22v: a notice of a death, added in the 16th century.
Decoration:
24 large letters 'KL' in red and blue with pen-flourishing in blue and red, one at the beginning of each month (ff. 1v, 2r, 2v, 3r, 3v, 4r, 4v, 5r, 5v, 6r, 6v, 7r, 8r, 9r, 10r, 11v, 12v, 14r, 15r, 16r, 17v, 18v, 20r, 21r).

This manuscript was compiled in the 13th century for the Benedictine Abbey of Schmerlenbach (near Aschaffenburg in Bavaria, Germany), with subsequent entries to the obituary calendar continuing to the end of the 17th century.
Purchased by the British Museum from Messrs Boone, London bookseller, 11 March 1854, for £1 using the Bridgewater Fund (£12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829): see inscription (f. [v] recto).
