ORIGINAL letters from Charles I., when prisoner in Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight, to Henry Firebrace [afterwards knighted by Charles II.], relative to plans for his escape, the means of communication with his adherents, etc.; 23 Apr.-27 Dec. 1648, and n.d. Holograph, in a feigned hand; signed "J." and addressed "D." Included also also the following letters and papers:-
1. "D." [Henry Firebrace] to [Charles I.]; n.d., ff. 8, 23.
2. "N." [Jane, wife of Bromo Whorwood] to Henry Firebrace; 20 Apr.-17 Aug. [1648]. With seals. The third letter, is written in conjunction with T. Browne, and the last is signed with the writer's own initials "J. W." ff. 17, 25, 27, 28, 29, 38, 44.
3. Acknowledgment by Charles I. of the receipt of £100 from William Widering 24 July, 1648. Holograph; signed. f. 35.
4. K[atherine, widow of George Stewart, Lord d'] Aubigny, to Henry Firebrace; n.d., f. 50.
5. - to [Henry Firebrace], enclosing a letter from the king; n.d. On the back is a cipher of names. f. 51.
6. Cipher designed by Charles I., with note by the same. Holograph. f. 53.
7. "The names of severall persons knowne to King Charles the First of blessed memory by the letters of the alphabet heereafter mentioned who were serviceable to his majestic in the tymes of his most strickt ymprisonment by the Rebells in A° 1648." In the hand of Henry Firebrace. f. 54.
8. Certificate by W[illiam Juxon, Archbisliop of] Canterbury, that he was charged by Charles I., on the day before his execution, to recommend Henry Firebrace to his son [Charles II.]; 25 Nov. 1661. Signed. f. 56.
9. Charles II. to the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, nominating Henry Firebrace to the first vacant fellowship; Whitehall, 12 Oct. 1673. Copy. f. 58.
