- Title:
- Inquisition post mortem of Anne Montagu, duchess of Exeter
- Scope & Content:
-
Inquisition post mortem of Anne Montagu, duchess of Exeter. These were inquiries into the property of tenants-in-chief (people who held land directly from the Crown). Royal officials would summon jurors to testify to what property the deceased held, what rent they owed, and who was the heir, in order to maintain the king’s feudal rights and exact any dues or duties.
Held at Exeter before Thomas Gotreaux, 26 April 1458. The jurors testified that Anne died on 28 November 1457, ten years after the death of her husband, John Holland, duke of Exeter, and that her heir was her stepson, Henry Holland [1430-75], duke of Exeter. They describe the lands that she held county by county, what service she owed, who she had enfeoffed with them, and their value. Relates mostly to lands in Devon and Dorset which were held in dower from Duke John and her first husband, Richard Hankford, esquire.
Endorsed (in a late 19th century hand): ‘Purchased of F. Harvey / 9 March 1878’.
