CORRESPONDENCE of James Hay, Baron Hay [1615], Viscount Doncaster [1618], and Earl of Carlisle [1622, ob. 1636], chiefly in connexion with his embassies: to Germany in 1619 on the affairs of the Palatinate, to -France in 1621 at the outbreak of the Huguenot war, to France and Spain in 1623 during the visit of Prince Charles to Madrid, and to France in 1624 to negotiate the marriage of the Prince with Henrietta Maria; 1616-1636. A few documents are included of earlier and later dates, between 1602 and 1689. Six Volumes. Paper. Folio. The letters of Lord Carlisle are chiefly drafts or copies in the hands of secretaries. A portion of the correspondence during the embassy to Germany is printed, from other sources, among Letters and other documents illustrating the relations between England and Germany, etc., ed. S. R. Gardiner, Camden Society, series i., ii., 1865, 1868 ; and many of the letters relating to the French match m ere included by Lord Hardwicke (to whom the collection formerly belonged) in his State Papers, 1778, vol. i. pp. 523-570.
