CORRESPONDENCE and papers of William Asheby, of Loseby, co. Leicester, during his embassy to Scotland, whither he was sent in July 1588, being recalled in Jan. 15 89/90 ; extending over the latter part of his embassy, from July 1589, and continuing down to the time of his election as M.P. for Chichester, through the interest of Lord Lumley, in 1593. Asheby's letters relating to public affairs are especially valuable as being the drafts, mostly holograph, of his correspondence with the English Ministers, Burleigh and Walsingham. A few of the despatches themselves are to be found among the burnt fragments of Cotton MS., Caligula D. I.; and copies of the same, made before the fire, also exist in Harley MS. 4647. See also Add. MS. 22,958, and Bannatyne Club, vol. xxvi.
