REGISTER of deeds relating to property owned or held by Augustine Steward, of London, of the family of Steward, of Ely. He was born in 1542; and married firstly, in 1577, Lucy, daughter of Lawrence Searle, relict of John Campion, of Hoxton, and secondly, in 158 0/1, Anne, daughter of Thomas Argall, relict of Clement Sisley, of Barking; and had land with both wives. The places to which the deeds refer are: Wisbech (ff. 12, 218), Guilden Morden (f. 35), Bassingbourn (f. 37), Ely (f. 77), co. Cambridge;-Hoxton (f. 24 b), London (ff. 52, 56, 81), co. Middlesex ;-Stradsett (f. 34), Outwell (ff. 42, 71, 212), co. Norfolk ; - Aveley (f. 63), Barking (ff. 117-194, 201-207), Canewdon Rectory (f. 195), co. Essex;-Hadham (f. 85), co. Herts. Plans are attached of property at Hoxton (f. 31 b), Hadham (f. 93 b), and Barking (f. 175 b). The property in London was a house called Glastonbury Place iii West Smithfield, which Augustine Steward inhabited (ff. 52, 81); and a tenement " known by the signe of the Kinges armes in West Cheap (f. 56).
Among other entries are:-
1. The will of Robert Steward [brother of Augustine], who died 19 Jan. 1570[1] " in Holborn, at the sio-ne of the crosse kies, oiler against the Bishop of Elyies house," and was buried in Ely Cathedral. f. 5.
