This is a 12th-century collection of works by the Alexandrian poet Claudianus Claudius (d. after 404), including De Raptu Proserpinae (The Rape of Proserpine), De Bello Gildonico (On the Gildonic War), and his poems on the marriage of the Emperor Honorius, for whom he was a court poet, and the consulship of his minister Stilicho.

Provenance:
? Henry I (b. 1127, d. 1181), known as the Liberal, count of Champagne, in the 1160s: decorated by the same workshop at Troyes that decorated other manuscripts for the count (according to Stirnemann, 'Un manuscript de Claudien' (2003), 53-57).
Alexandre Petau (d. 1672), senator of Paris and bibliophile: identified as the 'Petavianus secundus' that was used for the 1650 and 1665 editions by Nicolas Heinsius the Elder (b. 1620, d. 1681); his shelfmark 'M.37' (f. 1r); left his collection after it was consulted by Heinsius and before Petau's death (see Stirnemann 'Un manuscript de Claudien' (2003), 53-57).
Anthony Askew (d. 1774), physician and book collector, owned in 1774: his sale, London, Leigh & Sotheby, 12 March 1785, Lot 454; purchased by Michael Wodhull for £3. 5. 0 (note on f. [ii] recto).
Michael Wodhull (b. 1740, d. 1816), book-collector and translator, owned between 1785 and 1816: his inscriptions 'Leigh's Auction Dr Askew's manuscripts 3£ 5s'. M: Wodhull Mar: 12th 1785 (f. [ii] recto); and 'Collated + complete, excepting one defect in the 6th Idyllium and four in the Rape of Proserpine, which are omissions in the manuscript: for it has not suffered any mutilation' (f. [ii] recto); his sale, London, Sotheby’s 11-21 January 1886 (note on flyleaf); purchased by the British Museum, together with 6 other manuscripts, for a combined price of £341. 5. 0., using the Farnborough Fund (£3,000 bequeathed in 1838 by Charles Long, Baron Farnborough (b. 1761, d. 1838), a cousin of Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829), founder of the collection.
