Prose and Verse Miscellany
- Scope & Content:
-
The manuscript is a composite miscellany of verse and prose texts of a religious and didactic character.
ff. 71r-74v: booklet with 15th-century medical recipes against gout, pestilence, swellings and other pains. 130 x 90 mm ( text space: 95 x 75 mm)
The core parts of the manuscript were completed at various points during the thirteenth century, with additions to these in the mid-fourteenth century. Internal evidence indicates that quires i and v-viii, and probably ii-iv as well, were almost certainly grouped together by the middle of the fourteenth century. Quire ix may have been part of the volume in the thirteenth century, and thus associated with quires i-viii by the mid-fourteenth century. Quire x could have been inserted at any time between the late-fifteenth and early-nineteenth centuries; there is no evidence of its association with the other contents prior to its sale. (For further details, see Hill, 'British Library MS Egerton 613 - I', Notes & Queries, n.s. 25 (1978), pp. 408-09).
