Decorated initials in colours and gold extending to form a partial border; many with knights jousting, hybrids, dragons, animals and birds. Musical notation on red four-line staves (ff. 172v-213v) or on red five-line staves (ff. 288r-321v). Rubrics in gold. Small initials in blue with red penwork decoration or in gold with purple penwork decoration. Paraphs in blue or gold. Line-fillers in blue or pink and white.
The subjects of the images and marginalia are:
f. 43r: A Franciscan nun kneeling before the Virgin and Child at the beginning of the Ave Maria in French.
f. 76r: A face in an initial with foliage growing out if its mouth.
f. 89r: A male hybrid creature at the beginning of a prayer in Latin, 'O beata Dei'.
f. 97r: A face in an initial; a goat, rabbit, dog and bird in the border.
f. 214r: A cleric with tonsure offers the host (perhaps the last rites) to a Franciscan nun who is cradled on her bed by a fellow nun; an archer shoots an arrow at a bird in the border.
f. 225r: Christ enthroned showing his wounded hands; a rabbit, a dog and an archer shooting at rabbits in the border.
f. 237v: Christ displays a wound in his side to a Franciscan nun, in the Hours of the Passion; jousting knights with shields bearing heraldic motifs, birds and a rabbit in the border.
f. 288r: St Katherine with a wheel hands a scroll to a kneeling Franciscan friar, at the beginning of the chant, 'Vernans viridarium'.

Origin:
Périgueux, Southern France.
Provenance:
Probably made for the Franciscan nun depicted in several of the initials; the Litany (ff. 230r-231v) includes St Francis, St Dominic and St Claire; prayers include feminine forms (e.g., 'mihi peccatrice' (f. 261r)). Attributed to the Périgueux region as St Front follows Sts Peter and Paul in the Franciscan litany (see Hugues-Hugues, Manuscript Music (1906), I, 255). The figures on horseback in a bas-de-page scene (f. 237v) wear heraldic surcoats, and although damaged the arms have been identified by Stones as perhaps belonging to the Counts of Périgord (Stones, 'Stylistic Attribution' (2006), n. 74).
Added prayers in various hands in Latin and in Provencal French, using feminine forms (ff. 1r-11r; 322r-329v).
Purchased by the British Museum from Payne & Foss, 23 July 1842 for £5 5s, using the Farnborough Fund (£3,000 bequeathed in 1838 by Charles Long, Baron Farnborough (b. 1761, d. 1838), a cousin of Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829), founder of the collection).
