Proceedings of the condemnation trial of Joan of Arc; extracts from Martial d’Auvergne, Les Vigiles du roi Charles VII
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains a later copy of the condemnation trial or processus against Joan of Arc (b. c. 1412, d. 1431). Joan was put on trial following her capture by the Burgundian army outside the walls of Compiègne on 23 May 1430. Pierre Cauchon (b. 1371, d. 1442), Bishop of Beauvais, conducted the trial, which began with a month and a half of procedural investigations. The first public session with Joan took place on 21 February 1431. At the trial’s conclusion, she was condemned as a relapsed heretic and was subsequently burned at the stake in Rouen on 30 May 1431. After the trial ended, Bishop Cauchon ordered two notaries to gather all the documents related to the trial, together with the French interrogations (also known as ‘French minute’), and to translate them into Latin. The result was a text now known as the ‘Trial of Joan of Arc’.
In addition to the trial proceedings, this volume also contains a number of extracts relating to Joan’s life, taken from Les Vigiles du roi Charles VII, a versified French history of the Hundred Years War written by Martial d’Auvergne (b. 1430, d. 1508). The complete text of the Vigiles now survives as Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, ms français 5054.
The manuscript also contains a list of the bishops of Paris and a selection of epitaphs copied from churches in Paris and Rouen, including that of the theologian Nicholas de Lyra (b. c. 1270, d. 1349), who was buried in the House of the Cordeliers in Paris.
