PLEAS, Yearbooks and Eyres, tempp. Edw. I.-III [between 1272-1377]. The Yearbooks are of various terms, 6-14 Edw. II., and differ much from Maynard's MS. (Add. 35,094). They are supplemented by many other pleas having no definite arrangement, although Some are dated (25 Edw. I.-13 Edw. II.). The eyres are partly later (temp. Edw. III.), and on separate quires. In French or Latin. The chief contents are :-
1. Crown-cases from the eyre held at Canterbury, 7 [or 6, see below] Edw. II. Chiefly in Latin. A different report from that given below in art. 3. Imperfect at the beginning. Followed continuously by other pleas, which do not seem to be Kentish. f. 9.
2. "Placita itineris apud Turrim London.": pleas of the London eyre of 14 Edw. II. [1320-1], beg. " Entre les altres cries." A different report from that of Harley MSS. 453, 1062. f. 22.
3. A collection in twenty quires, including a number of year-books of Edw. II., an eyre and miscellaneous pleas, partly dated, partly undated. f 39. They include: (a) Yearbooks for Mich. 7 Edw. II.- Alich. 8 Edw. II. f. 51 ;-(b) Kentish eyre, 7 Edw. II. (but in MSS. Hargr. 210, ff. 50, 181, Harl. 453, f. 43, and Harl. 1062, f. 13, it is dated 6 Edw. II.). f. 1ll b;-(c) Yearbooks, Mich. 8 Edw. II. Continued. f. 129b;-(d) Mich. 9 Edw. II. f. 132;-(e) Mich. 10 Edw. II. f. 137 ;-(f) Easter, 6 Edw. II. f. 155;-(g) Hil. 6 Edw. II. f. 160;-(h) Easter, 10 Edw. II. f. 175; (i) Mich. 11 Edw. II. (these last two dates have been altered and are uncertain). f. 177 ;-(k) Hil. 11 Edw. II. f. 178b;-(1) Mich. 12 Edw. II.-Mich. 14 Edw. II. f. 187. In addition there are single pleas or small groups dated in varioiis years of Edw. II. (passim) and a few dated temp. Edw. I., viz., 2 6 Edw. I. (f. 144 b), 32 (?) Edw. I. (f. 170), 32 Edw. I. (f. 172 b), 34 Edw. I. (f. 178 b). All these differ greatly in contents, order and wording from tho printed edition and from other MS. texts.
4. The eyre held at Nottingham [in 3 Edw. III., Dec. 1329] by Sir William de Herle and others. Another and less full copy of the same report is in Add. MS. 5926, f. 1. Apparently imperfect at the beginning. At the end (f. 225 b) are the " articuli de iti nere," in Latin, beg. " De veteribus placitis corone," and ending with the " articuli " respecting the Statute of Northampton. f. 209.
5. " Iter Derbeye the eyre held by Herle and others in 1330, beg. ,Piers de Querdon se pleint." Differs much in arrangement from the copy of the same report in Add. 318. 5926 (f. 11). f. 232. It is preceded (f. 228) by three pleas to which the same title has been erroneously affixed. At least two of them are of later date.
6. The eyre held by Sir Geoffrey le Scrope and others at Northampton, 3 Edw. III. (Nov. 1329), beg. " En primes assemblez tolls les Justices." A very full report of these long sittings, greatly exceeding in length the reports in Add. MSS. 5294 and 24,063. f. 243.
7. The eyre held at Bedford [4 Edw. III., 1330?], beg. " Nicholas de T. porta un bref in consimili casu vers un Johan de F." Another copy of the same report, differently arranged, is in Add. MS. 5926 (f. 2 3 b). f. 3 3 7.
8. Undated pleas, probably not chronological. Some of these appear in Add. MS. 35,094 under 10 and 13 Edw.II. f. 353. Vellum; ff. 365. Tempp. Edw. II. and III. 0ld binding of wooden boards, covered with white goat-skin. At the beginning (f. 2 b) are some tables of contents, with a colophon, " Finem hic capit Johannis Collys Alphabeticum," etc., dat. 14 Oct. 1518. On f. 1 is the name of John Pake (16th cent. "). Belonged to Sir Gregory Osborne Page-Turner, 4th Bart. (sale-cat. 1824, lot 2715). Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., in Mar. 1827 (MS. 3124, sale-cat. 1898, lot 323). 11.25 x 7.75 in.
