LETTER-BOOK of Edward Zouche, Baron Zouche, acting as deputy to Sir Thomas Leighton, Governor of Guernsey; 31 July, 1600-28 Apr. 1601. Headed in Zouche's hand "A booke of all such letters as I doe send to any place, 'beguile the seventeenth of August, 1600." Zouche had puritan leanings and was a patron of the puritan divine Thomas Cartwright, who is often mentioned. There are three letters to Sir Walter Ralegh, then Governor of jersey, establishing more cordial relations. Among other correspondents addressed are Sir Thomas and Lady Leighton, Sir Thomas Ridgeway [cr. Earl of Londonderry 1623], Archbishop Whitgift, [Thomas Grey] Lord Grey [of Wilton], [Peregrine Bertie,] Lord Willoughby [D'Eresby, Governor of Berwick], and his sister [Susan,] Countess of Kent, Sir Robert Cecil ancl William Davison, Secretaries of State, and one of Davison's sons [? Walter, the poet], and Matthias de L'Obel, the botanist. The names are in the index.
