LETTER-BooK of Sir Dudley Carleton [cr. Baron Carleton 1626, and Viscount Dorchester 1628], Ambassador to Venice; Jan.-Sept. 1615. During the greater part (Feb.-July) of this time Carleton was on a special mission to Savoy to negotiate the peace of Asti between Spain and Savoy. Prefixed are copies of his instructions for this mission, dated 5 Dec. 1614, credentials, etc. Besides Carleton's own letters, which are addressed to [Robert Carr,] Earl of Somerset, Lord Chamberlain, Sir Ralph Winwood, Secretary of State, or to the King (with one, f. 77 b, to Archbishop Abbot), there are also copies of Winwood's letters to Carleton. Some passages are in cipher. Paper; ff. 89. A.D. 1615. Belonged to the Fairfax Collection (Leeds Castle sale-cat. 1831, lot 162), Cochran the bookseller (catal. 1837, no. 393), William Van Mildert, Bishop of Durham, and Sir Thomas Phillipps, who purchased it from Payne the bookseller in 1838 (Phillipps MS. 7433, sale-cat. 1898, lot 156). 12 x 8 in.
