SELECTED Correspondence of Sir Frederic Madden, K.H., Keeper of the Manuscripts in the British Museum 1837-1866; 1823-1870. Madden at first worked under Henry Petrie as a transcriber for the Record Commission, afterwards, in 1826-1827, he was employed at the Museum on the catalogue of printed books, and in 1827 he joined the staff as Assistant-Keeper of MSS. Among his regular correspondents are Drs. Bandinel and Bliss and Rev. H. 0. Coxe at Oxford, Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., Albert Way (many of whose letters are sealed with mediæval seals), Sir Charles George Young, Garter King of Arms, Charles Purton Cooper, Secretary of the Record Commission, Francisque Michel and others, and among the many literary men whose autographs occur are Sir Walter Scott, Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Babington Macaulay, and John Ruskin. The names of all the writers are given in the Index. At f. 182 of Eg. 2842 is a small fragment of a xv. cent. paper MS., containing a portion of the German poem Sibyllenweissagung, of which many copies are noticed by F. Vogt in Paul und Braune's Beiträge (Halle, 1877), iv. p. 48. There aro also catalogues of MSS. at Eton College and Lincoln Cathedral; v. index. Twelve volumes.
