THE BOROUGHBRIDGE ROLL: a roll on which are recorded in contemporary hands royal writs received by the sheriff of Northamptonshire relating to the rebellion and trial of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, 22 March, 1322, with other matter in connection with the battle of Boroughbridge, co. York, 16 March. Printed by Sir F. T. Pal-rave in Parliamentary Writs, ii. pt. ii. p. 196. A facsimile of part of the heraldic portion is iii Foster's Some Feudal Coats (1902), p. xviii. The contents are:-
1. Writs to the sheriff of co. Northt. : (a) For the protection of the Isle of Ely; Westminster, 6 Dec. 15 Edw. II. [1321]. A similar writ is on the Close Roll, dat. 8 Feb. (Calendar, p. 515);-(b) For the arrest of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, and others for acts of rebellion at Bridgenorth, etc. ; Shrewsbury, 15 Jan. See Foedera (Record edition), ii. pt. i. p. 471 ;-(c) Appointing John de Somery and three others to raise men Gloucester, 8 Feb. ;-(d) For the attachment of rebels; Gloucester, 11 Feb. Shorter than the writ in Foedera, p. 473;-(e) For hue and cry after rebels; same date ;-(f) For all the armed force of the county to repair to Coventry by the first Sunday in Lent; Gloucester, 13 Feb. To this is appended a note in another hand, " Pretextu istius mandati omnes potentes corpore perrexerunt apud Couentriam, et pro multitudine preceptum est ut redeant, et rex assignauit Thomam de Rossale, Eusthachium de Burneby, ad eligendum de eis mille pedites et xii homines ad arma ad proficissendum eum rege. Summa expensaruni com[itatus] apud Couentriam per estimacionem cc.li." A writ of 14 March on the Close Roll (Cal. p. 517) countermands even the reduced levy;-
(g) "Alias quod rex tenet vicecomitem suspectum quia non atachiavit comitem "; Weston, 23 Feb. Cal. Close Roll, p. 519;-
(h) For the publication of a transcript of certain correspondence enclosed (in French) relating to dealings between the rebels and the Scots; 1 March. Cal. Close Roll, p. 525;-(i) For the proclamation, in full county and at other places, of the proceedings at the trial of the Earl of Lancaster, appended (imperfect); York, 6 Mar. (sic, for May ?), 15 Edw. II. [1322]. On the back (something is lost at the top) are 2. Names and arms of the King's side, in French, comprising 214 names, beginning with Sir Thomas Coudray. Also printed in the Genealogist, New Series, vols. i., ii. (1884, 1885).
3. Lists of (a) " Les nouns des grauntz mortz a Borghbrigge le marsdy et le mekerdy apres le feste saint Gregoire, lan du regne le roi Edward fiz au roi Edward quinzisme " (in another hand, " qui furent countre le Roy ") ;-(b) " Baneretz priz a Borghbrigge et aillours " (in another hand) " en memes col temps," with note that Lancaster was beheaded and certain of the others hanged and drawn;-(e) " Bachelers priz a Borghbrigge " (in another hand) " a meme loure que furent contre le Roy." At the end are grouped severally " iceux furent treynez et penduz," " iceux se rendirent au Roi," and " iceux fuyrent outre mer," and to the last name, Sire John de Euere, is appended " fust decolee." Vellum roll, 9 ft. 7 in. X 7 in. Belonged to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, President of the Board of Control 1822-1828.
