PORTOLANO executed in Italy, circ. 1540; according to John Holmes (Add. MS. 20753, f. 130) 'by the same hand as the Oxford MSS. Canonici 612, 646. With preliminary matter, viz. (a) Arms, az. a cross botonnée or, of the family of Guadagni of Florence. f. 1 ;-(b) Tables of declination, in three columus. f. 1 b;-(c) Celestial sphere. f. 2;-(d) Circular diagram of the planets, signs, months, etc. f. 3. The maps are: (1) Pacific Ocean, showing Magellan's Straits (disconnected from the northern part of S. America) and the discoveries of Cortés in the Gulf of California. ff. 3 b, 4;-(2) Atlantic Ocean, with the E. Coast of America and all Africa. ff. 4 b, 5 ;-(3) Indian Ocean. ff. 5 b, 6 ;-(4) Europe, between the latitudes S. Norway and Rome. ff. 6 b, 7 ;-(5) Coasts of Spain and part of Africa, including the Canary Islands. ff. 7 b, 8;-(6) W. Mediterranean. ff. 8 b, 9 ;-(7) Central Mediterranean and Adriatic. ff. 9 b, 10 ;-(8) E. Mediterranean. ff. 10b, ll;-(9) Black Sea. ff. llb, 12;-(10) Aegean Sea. ff. 12 b, 13 ;-(11) General chart of the World, showing routes to Peru and to and from the Moluccas. ff. 13b, 14;-(12) Hemispheric map of the old World, showing the divisions of Ptolemy. ff. 14 b, 15. At the end (ff. 15 b, 16) is a table of dimensions of the planetary spheres, etc., beg. " Antiqui cognouerunt quod centrum "; and in the cover (f. 17) is a compass-card, the needle lost. Vellum; ff. i. + 17. Circa 1540. Carefully illuminated. Probbably belonged to the Guadagni family;see above. Afterwards belonged, with Eg. 2855-2861, to John Hawkins, of Bi-nor Park, co. Sussex (d. 1841). Original binding of finely tooled brown leather.
