GLOSSARY of the Northumbrian dialect, compiled by James Raine, Canon and Chancellor of York, apparently begun in 1854 (f. 1) and continued down to bis death in 1896; containing an alphabetical list of words used in the North of England, extracted from Registers of Wills, Ecclesiastical Proceedings of York and Durham, Court-Rolls, Depositions, and other manuscript and printed sources, with illustrative quotations. Some of the entries under A are embodied in a glossary printed by the Surtees Society, vol. 85 (1888). Appended (f. 306) are loose entries of additional words intended for incorporation, etc., and (f. 578) a few letters to Canon Raine, 1857-1895. Paper; ff. 588. Folio.
