PEDIGREE of the family of Cotton, to which Sir Robert Cotton, founder of the Cotton library, belonged ; compiled in 1635 for Edward Coton of Ipswich, and continued to 1722. Interspersed are transcripts of a few charters, etc.; and 107 escutcheons (one blank, as also many of the impalements) with arms in tincture, beginning with two separate coats of the Cotton family: (1) Barry of six, arg and az., in chief 3 round buckles purpure ff. 1b, 2b; (2) Arg., betw. 3 pellets a bend sa. f. 3b, etc. This latter coat was superseded, on one branch of the family, by (3) the coat of Ridware, az., an eagle displayed arg., armed gu., on the marriage, temp. Edw. III, of William Cotton with Agnes Ridware. f. 5 b. The other families whose arms appear are: Brett. f. 4 b. Waldecheif. f. 5 (pedigree, f. 21). Faukoner. f. 5b (pedigree, f. 18 b). Langham. f. 6 (pedigree, f. 22b). St. John. f. 6. Savage. f. 6. Sedley. f. 6. Powtrell. f. 6. Molineux. f. 6. Basing. f. 6 (pedigree, f. 21). Fitzherbet. f. 6. Venables. f. 6 (pedigree, f. 19 b). Poole. f. 6 b. Brereton. f. 7. Grosvenor. f. 7. Bradburne. f. Bassett. f. 7. Sale. f. 7 b. Garnish. f. 7 b. Vescy. f. 10. Felton. f. 10. Warner. f. 11. Burgoyne. f. 11 b. Wright. f. 11 b. Tyrrell. f. 11 b. Spelman. f. 12. Dusgate. f. 12. Rous. f. 15. Oldfield. f. 15. Weshenham. f. 16 b. Knightley. f. 16b. Parys [Paris] f. 17. Harvey. f. 17. Sherley [Shirley]. f. 17 b. Tamworth. f. 17b. Brocas. f. 17 b. Howard. f. 18. Dutton. f. 20. Wateville (with pedigree). f. 22. Godvile. f. 22. Roos. f. 22. Darsham. f. 23. Coggeshall. f. 23b. Southcote. f. 24. Cavendish. f. 24 b. Stratton. f. 24 b.
The arms of the see of Exeter occur on f. 8 b, impaling those of William Cotton, Bishop 1598-1621, which are here represented by the adopted Ridware coat (3). This is a mistake of the compiler; his arms were Cotton (2), given above, as is shown by his tomb in Exeter Cathedral. At the end are the following loose leaves: (a) "A discent of the lords of Conington, from Waltheof, Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton," down to Feb. 1730 [1]. f. 26b; (b) Pedigree to show kinship with Archbishop Chichele, Founder of All Souls' College, Oxford; ending with the children of Mrs. Bowdler [Elizabeth Stuart Cotton] and with Thomas Wodehouse; with notes, and advice that "this half sheet be annexed to Mrs. Bowdler's pedigiree by way of rider." Dat. Jan. 26, 1767. f. 28; (c) Piece cut from a letter in the same hand to [T. B]owdler Esq., beginning "I have heard of old Sir Rt's being indicted for stealing the Council books (cf. Add. MS. 36682 A, f. 4; note in same hand). f. 29. Paper ff. i + 29. Folio. Each of the covers has the armorial bookstamp of Sir Robert Cotton, affixed, as is stated in a pencil note (f. 1) signed by John Holmes, Assistant-Keeper of MSS. 1850-1854, "(by permission) from a stamp belonging to the Trustees of the British Museum in 1838." Sotheby's sale-cat., 27 July, 1911, lot 254.
