SACRAMENTARY, apparently executed for a monastery connected with Jerusalem (see below, artt. 1, 6). Contents : 1. Calendar. Jan. and Feb., on the first leaf of an inserted sheet, written in an Italian script, late 14th cent., evidently for the use of Augustinian Friars Hermits (Feb. 6, "Anniuersarium patrum et matrum ordinis nostri" Feb. 9 [for 10 ?], "S. Guillemi conf., semi duplex," in red; Feb. 28, "Translatio S. Augustini ep. et conf.," also in red: cf. Add. MS. 16890, etc.). The originial Calendar (Mar.-Dec.) has a number of entries referring specially to Jerusalem, viz. Mar. 18, "Ierusalem. Alexandri ep. et mart." ; May 4, "Ierusalem. Quiriaci ep. et conf." ; July 15, "Dedicatio ecclesie dominici sepulchri. et liberatio Ierusalem" ; Aug. 23, "Ierusalem. Zachei ep. et conf." ; Oct. 22, "Ierusalem. Marci ep. et mart."; Oct. 29, "Ierusalem. Narcisi ep. et conf." Apart from these, there is a preponderance of French saints, e.g. "Andegauis. Albini ep. et conf." (Mar. 1); Germanus (May 28, July 31, Oct. 1 and 11) Medard and Gildard (June 8) ; Marcial (June 30) ; Martin (July 4 and Nov. 11, the latter with octave) ; Giles (Sept. 1) ; Salvius, Bishop [of Alby] (Sept. 10) ; Maurilius (Sept. 13) ; Remy and Vedast (Oct. 1) ; Denis, etc. (Oct. 9) ; Quintin (Oct. 31) ; Amantius, Bishop [of Rodez] (Nov. 4); "Bricii ep. et conf. et gloriosi Verani ep. et conf." (Nov. 13) [the latter doubtless either Bishop of Cavaillon or of Vence]; Anianus (Nov. 17) ; Trophinus, Bisliop [of Arles] (Dec. 29). St. Thomas of Canterbury is included (Dec. 29, d. 1170, canonized 1173), but not the Conception of the Virgin (Dec. 8). The following insertions occur, in an Italian 14th cent. hand : Apr. 14, "O[biit] Deus te adiuuet, clericus"; June 30, "O[biit] Petrus Johannes bonus [Bongiovanni], clericus"; Oct. 22, "O[biit] dominus Egidius, cardinalis diaconus," perhaps referring to Aegidius Petri Leonis, card. diac. S. Nicolai in Carcere Tulliano, d. 1195. f. 1.
2. Table of movable feasts for the nineteen years of the lunar cycle. f. 7.
3. "Oratio S. Amrosii episcopi ad Missam" (modern heading) : the prayer before Mass, beg. "Summe sacerdos et uere pontifex." The conclusion, followed by collect, secret, and postcommunion commemorating the Resurrection, is in an Italian script, late 14th cent., on the second leaf (f. 8) of an inserted sheet (see art. 1 above). f. 7 b. Ff. 9, 10-13 are misbound; they should follow ff. 19, 139 respectively. see below, artt. 5, 7, 8.
4. Preface (general) and Canon Missae, the latter containing the rubrics "Leo papa adiunxit" (at the "Hanc igitur oblationem"), "Gregorius papa constituit pater noster" (at the Lord's Prayer), "Sergius papa" and "Innocentius papa constituit dare pacem" (before and after the "Agnus Dei") ; cf. A. Fortescue, The Mass, 1912, pp. 137, 387, 370. Imperfect, wanting the first leaf of the Canon. f. 14.
5. Prefaces for special occasions, followed by introits de Tempore from Advent to Low Sunday. ff. 19, 9.
6. Sacramentary, as follows : (a) Temporale ; with the "stationes," mostly as in the Roman Missal. At Maundy Thursday is an injunction (f. 45) "ut eo die reliogus [sc. religiosus] quisque a communione sese minime subtrahat" (cf. Harley MS. 5289, f. 165, Durham Cathedral, 14th cent.) ; and on Good Friday the stealthy in modum furentium", sc. furantium) rending of the veils over the altar at the words "Partiti sunt uestimenta mea" is ordered (f. 45 b, cf. Harl. 5289, f. 168 b, and see H. Thurston, Lent and Holy Week; 1904, p. 336). The monastic character of the book appears from such phrases as "Postquam autem adorauerint fratres" "communicent sub silentio fratres" (ff. 48 b, 49), etc. A curious feature is the citation of authorities for special points of ritual, e.g. "Auctoritas Alexander papa," "Auctoritas Amalarius," "Benedictio cerei, quam Zosimus papa constituit" (ff. 49, 50 b), etc. f. 20; (b) Sanctorale, beg. vii kal. Jan., Nat. S. Stephani protomart. ; agreeing in the main with the Calendar, but containing only the following references to Jerusalem: v id. Mar., "Ierusalem. S. xl. Mart." (f. 82) ; [id. Jul.], "Missa pro libertate Ierusalem de manu paganorum" (f. 93); xi kal. Nov., "Ierusalem. S. Marci ep. et mart." (f. 110 b). f. 74 b; (c) Commune Sanctorum. f. 117; (d) "In dedicatione ecclesie," "In dedicatione altaris," and "Missa cotidiana de illo sancto qui in presenti iacet monasterio." f. 118 b; (e) Missae votivae. f. 120 (Mass for Queen added in margin, f. 124, in a contemp. hand).
7. "Oratio S. Ambrosii, quem (sic) sacerdos dicat supplicando ante altare finita missa [sc. ante Missam]" : prayer beg. "Deus qui de indignis," and other prayers before Mass, including "orationes uestiarum." ff. 139 b, 10-11.
8. Ordinarium Missae. ff. 11-13 b.
9. Missa "pro commemoratione S. Marie et omnium sanctorum et pace ecclesie," added in a slightly later hand. f. 13 b.
10. Gospels "de resurrectione," "de ascensione domini," "de sancta trinitate," etc. f. 140.
11. Marriage service, with nuptial Mass. f. 145 b.
12. Exorcismus salis et aquae, "In purificatione S. Marie. Benedictio candelarum," and the 3rd and 2nd Gospels for Christmas Day. f.148.
13. "Missa S. Aquatii sociorumque eius" [presumably either the Acatius said to have been crucified on Mount Ararat, or the "Agathius sive Acacius" martyred at Constantinople: see Acta SS., 22 June, p. 151, 8 May, p. 288] ; followed by the Gospel for the Annunciation, imperf. at end. An addition, late 13th cent., on a blank page. f. 151 b. At the beginning and end are fragments of a Legenda, apparently written in Italy, 13th cent., in double columns of 36 lines, containing at beg. (i) Passio S. Anastasii [22 Jan.], parts of lections 7-9: a different version from those enumerated in Bibl. Hag. Lat., nos. 408- 413 ; but lect. 9 is nearly identical with lect. 7-8 for SS. Vincent and Anastasius in the printed Roman Breviary (Venice, 1478) Ends "uenerantur in monasterio ad Aquas Saluias." f. ii; (ii) "In S. [E]merentiana" [23 Jan.]: parts of lections 1-3, lect. 3 nearly identical with cap. 3 of Acta S. Agnetis printed in Acta SS., 21 Jan., p. 717. Beg. ". . . . gaudiis sollempnem nobis gl[ori]ose Emerentiane." f. iii; and at end (iii) Apparitio S. Michaelis in Monte Tancia [8 May] (Bibl. Hag. Lat., Suppl., 1911, no. 5947 c). Beg. (imperf.) "archangeli dedicata . . . Introitus autem cripte minus a medio montis deorsuni pendet." Ends "Ab illo autem die Sabinemsium populus locum cepit uenerari . . . . patronum atque intercessorem aput deum altissimum, qui uiuit," etc. f. iv ; (iv) "Passio sanctorum Gordiani et Epimachi" [10 May]; imperf. at end. The same (but for the opening words) as in the Roman Breviary. Beg. "Hodie colitur natale sanctorum martirum . . . quos Iulianus imperator." f. iv b. Vellum; ff. vi + 151. 117/8 in. x 85/8 in. Earl XIII cent., with additions, XIII-XIV centt. Gatherings of 8 leaves (ff. 1 and 8 inserted in quire i ; quire ii, ff. 14-19, 9, wants a leaf ; xviii4, ff. 10-13, misplaced ; last4 ), numbered in a 17th cent. hand. A full-page miniature of the Crucifixion (with Mary, John, sun and moon the spelling "Ihs Crishtus" is curious) in Italo-Byzantine style, on a dark blue ground, on f. 14 b; a few large illuminated initials in similar style, those on ff. 14 and 62 enclosing figures; initials in red and blue, some partly flourished, throughout. Bound in wooden boards covered with brown leather, with brass studs and clasps. Bookplate of George Dunn, (sale-cat. 1913, lot 578). From the Farnborough Fund.
