CORRESPONDENCE of Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant, Governor of Nova Scotia, connected with the raising in the United States and N. America of a foreign legion for service in the Crimean War 1855-1856, etc. Some of the letters are addressed to his Secretary, Hon. Lewis M- Wilkins. The names of the writers are given in the Index. They include John F[iennes Twisleton] Crampton [K.C.B. 1856, 2nd Bart. 1858], Envoy Extraordinary to the United States, whose first two letters (1853-1854) refer to the Fishery and Reciprocity questions, Joseph Howe [Governor of Nova Scotia in 1873], C. H. Stanley, British Consul at New York, Lieut. J[ohn] W[illiam] Preston and others. At the beginning (f. 1) is an opinion (given in 1812 ?) upon the American Neutrality Act of 20 Apr. 1818; and at the end (f. 404) the New York Herald (European edition), 25 Sept. 1855.
