ANTIPHONER (Pars Hiemalis), apparently written in the Cistercian abbey of Columba, dioc. Piacenza. The contents are :-
(1) Temporale, from Saturday before first Sunday in Advent to Easter Eve. f. 1 ;-
(2) Proprium Sanctorum, from S. Andrew to the Annunciation. f. 133 b ;-
(3) Commune Sanctorum. f. 196 b ;-
(4) Office of the Dead. f. 231 ;-
(4a) Venitary, etc., f. 236 b ;-
(5) Hymnarium, agreeing closely with the Hymnarium Parisiense of Pairis in Alsace (ed. Carl Weinmann, Veröffentlichungen der Gregorianischen Akademie zu Freiburg (Schweiz), Heft ii, 1905), except that no. 47 of the printed edition here follows 22 (f. 260), and is followed by 32-38, 48-51, nos. 23-31, 39-46, 52-60 being omitted. A leaf is wanting after f. 259, containing hymn 21, verse 8, 1. 1-22, v. 5, 1. 4. f. 248;-
(6) Two canticles, Apprehendite disciplinam and Benedictus, followed by a later addition (f. 269 b), for the Annunciation, dated 1462 and signed Frater Iohannes Wasserpolcz de Hylaria (the Cistercian abbey of Wilhering, dioc. Passau, Austria). f. 268 b ;-(7) Canticles, without musical notation, for Sundays and Michaelmas, Christmas Day, the Apostles and Martyrs, One Martyr,and the Virgins. f.270. Vellum; ff.iii+273. 17 3/8 in. x 11 5/8 in. A.D.1295. Gatherings of 10 leaves (i8, last7). Sec. fol. " [ho-]-minum simul." On f. 273 b is the following colophon :
"Gratia sit Christo qui fecit ; non michi petro. Qui librum scripsi dictus logiusque notaui Urbe placentina natus de nomine digna. Columbe monachus Ihesu pronumine notus. Sunt bis sexcenti nonaginta quinque set anni."
For the abbey of Columba see P. L. Janauschek, Originum Cisterciensium, tom. i, no. cxi, p. 45. A large initial A in colours on f. 1 b, and 37 others througliout the volume. Smaller initials flourished in red and blue. Old binding of oak boards, covered with cow-hide. (Strips of an older (12th cent. ?) MS. have been inserted in some of the quires, e.g. at ff. 139,148.) Belonged to William Morris (book-label, f. i ; sale-cat., 1898,. lot 124) and George Dunn (book-label, f. ii and note, f. iii ; sale-cat., 1917, lot 1801).
