WILLIAM HOGARTH, The Analysis of Beauty; three separate drafts, each in two note-books, differing greatly from the work as printed (London, 1753). The former order of the volumes was III, VI, IV, I, II, V; they have been rearranged to form three series (numbered A-C) in their apparent chronological order (cf. 3012, f. 42 with 3014, f. 31, 3016, f. 18, and p. 124 of the printed work). Parts of another draft are Add. MS. 27992. The first four volumes are autograph, with sketches (chiefly in Vols. III and IV) for the plates ; some of these are reproduced by J. Ireland, Hogarth Illustrated, Supplement, 1798. Vols. V and VI are in a secretary's hand, with autograph additions and corrections. Many leaves have been cut out, especially in Vols. V and VI ; the quires have in all cases been made up to their original formation with blank leaves, on to which the strips remaining from the missing leaves have been pasted. Six volumes. Paper (except for vellum covers). Quarto.
Belonged to John Ireland, who obtained them from Mrs. Mary Lewis, of Chiswick, executrix of Mrs. Hogarth (Ireland, op. cit., Advertisement, pp. iii-iv ; sale-cat., King and Lochie, 6 Mar. 1810, lot 250). Small bookplate in each volume of initials (no. 30336 in Franks Coll., Dept. of Prints and Drawings) of [George John] W[arren] V[ernon, 5th Baron Vernon]. Sotheby's sale-cat., 5 June 1918, lot 490. From the Farnborough Fund.
