ORIGINAL letters, etc., viz.
A. Eight letters to Rev. Adam Sedgwick, Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge, concerning Darwin's essay On the Origin of Species :— (a) Charles [Robert] Darwin, replying to Professor Sedgwick's letter of criticism, 26 Nov. [1859]. Printed, after Sedgwick's letter (which is dated 24 Dec. [sc. Nov.] 1859), by J. W. Clark and T. M. Hughes in Life and Letters of Sedgwick, ii, p. 359. f. 1 ;— (b) C[harles] B[rent] Wale, seeking Sedgwick's opinion of the book on behalf of his father-in-law, the Archbishop of Dublin, 13 Feb. 1860. f. 4;— (c) R[ichar]d [Whately, Archbishop of] Dublin, five letters chiefly concerning the publication of the letter written by Sedgwick in compliance with the above request, 19 Feb.- 13 Apr. 1860. Sedgwick's letter appeared in The Spectator, 24 March 1860 (cf. Life of Sedgwick, ii, pp. 360, 361). ff. 5-14. B. Eighteen letters from Thomas Creevey to James Currie, M.D., of Liverpool ; 14 Mar. 1796-18 May 1805. The letters, except the first and last, were written in 1803, whilst Creevey was M.P. for Thetford, and abound with lively descriptions of the debates and criticism of the measures of that year. One letter (f. 44) gives an account of Major-General John Moore's camp at Shorncliffe and his suggestions for warding off the threatened French invasion. They are evidently the letters stated by Sir Herbert Maxwell, The Creevey Papers, i (1903), p. 16, to be missing from the main collection of Creevey's correspondence. ff. 16-59. Purchased at Sotheby's 24 July 1918, lot 930. C. Certified copy of part of the proceedings against Solomon Eccles, Quaker (d. 1683), in one of the Courts of Common Pleas at Barbados, 1678. Eccles, whose prosecution was ordered by the Assembly of Barbados on 19 Mar. 1678 (Cal. State Papers, Colonial, America and W. Indies, 1677-1680, no. 624), was charged with preaching to Quakers on 22 Mar. 1677[8] " at ye house of Margaret Sawyer in ye Parish of Christchurch." The document is endorsed in the hand of George Fox (cf. Stowe MS. 746, ff. 139, 140 and Add. 41063, F.): " the foles charges aganst s: egles & his triall at barbadus 1678." f. 61. From the Farnborough Fund. Paper. ff. 62. Folio.
