ALBUM AMICORUM of Joachim Camerarius (1603-1687), son of Ludwig Camerarius and fourth of the name (see Zedler, Universal-Lexicon, v, 396-7), during his travels and studies in England, Switzerland and France; Oxford, 22 Feb. 1625-Bourees, 30 July 1627 (the year 1628 on f. 94b must be a slip for 1627). Mainly Latin. The volume is inscribed (f. 2): 'Gratiae, favori, amicitiae magnorum, doctorum, arnicorum sacrum hoc Joachimus Camerarius offert MDCXXV.' Most of the entries are written by eminent professors (chiefly jurists and theologians), others by civil dignitaries, members of noble families and students. They are dated from (amongst other places) Oxford, London and Cambridge, Paris (Aug.-Sept. 1625), Geneva (Sept. 1625-Apr. 1627), Zürich, Basle and Bourges (June-July 1627). The names of all the writers are given in the Index to this Catalogue. From Oxford are: Sebastian Benefield, Meric Casaubon, Thomas Clayton, Edward Meetkerk, Thomas Prichard, John Prideaux, John Rouse, while from Cambridge are: Samuel Collins, John Mansel, William Moore, George Porter. Robert Greville, [2nd Baron Brooke 1628], dates his entry from Geneva 19 Sept. 1626, and his travelling companion, James Traill, two days later. Among foreign names may be mentioned: J[ean] Bouchier, painter, of Bourges, Théodore Godefroy, historian, Julius Pacius, jurist, and Giovanni Pesaro (Doge of Venice 1658). The following coats-of-arms occur: J. Moller, Johann Philipp, Graf zu Ortenburg, Philipp Reinhard, Graf zu Solms, Johann Wilhelm and Philipp Ludwig, juniores, Grafen zu Wied, Bartolomäus, Baron von on Zerotin. For these albums in general see Max Rosenheim, 'The Album Amicorum', in Archaeologia, lxii, 1910, pp. 251-308, and, on the collection of E. C. Bezzel (1727-1801), now largely in the British Museum, K. Goldmann, 'Der Poppenreuther Pfarrer Erhard Christian Bezzel und seine Stammbüchersammlung', Mitt. des Vereins für Gesch. d. Stadt Nürnberg, xlvii, 1956, pp. 341-415. Paper (f. 73 vellum); ff i + 110. 5.5/8 in. x 3.5/8 in. A.D. 1625-1627. The entries on ff. 7-9, 13, 54 (all at Geneva, 1626-1627) are accompanied by coats of arms in tincture. On ff. 12, 19 (the King), 20, 22, 24, 26 ('My Lord Maior'), 27, 28 ('A country-weoman') is a series of coloured drawings consisting of figures apparently copied from a roll illustrating the coronation procession of James I, figures from which also occur in other albums of this type (Egerton MSS. 1222, 1264, 1269); the initials C.R. on the uniform of the guard on f. 24 indicate that the drawings were made after the accession of Charles I on 27 Mar. 1625. At f. 73 is inserted a vellum leaf with a coloured miniature painting depicting a night attack by escalade on a walled city; as this faces an entry made at Geneva, the scene is probably the celebrated night attack on Geneva by the Duke of Savoy, known as the 'Escalade', on the night of 11-12 Dec. 1602. Original binding of brown calf, gilt-stamped and tooled. Inserted in the binding (ff. i, ii) are fragments of a leaf from a liturgical Psalter, written in England circ. 1400, containing portions of the psalms, etc., for Saturday's Matins and Lauds. From the Farnborough Fund.
