FORAN SYDENS KLOSTER: a setting, for soprano, alto, and chorus of women's voices, of words from Bjornstjerne Bjomson's 'Arnljot Gelline', with orchestral accompaniments (alternative piano part in red ink), in full score, by Edvard [Hagerup] Grieg (1843-1907), Op. 20. Autograph. This MS. was probably used for the first printed edition of E. W. Fritzsch, Leipzig, 1876. The work was written after Grieg's return from Rome in 1870 and dedicated to F[erencz] Liszt. German and English translations by F[ranz] von Holstein and Edm[und] W[illiam] Gosse (cf. f. 25) are given. A German translation by Emma Dahl has been crossed out (see Grieg's letter of 17 March, 1875 in G. Hauch, Breve fra Grieg, 1922). The composer's own corrections are in violet ink. For a pianoforte arrangement of the work in the Bergen Public Library, dated 11 Aug. 1871, see Edvard Grieg, Manuskripter og minner. Katalog, 1953, p. 18. Paper; ff. 25. Folio. Circ. 1871.
