PRECEDENT-BOOK, containing copies of letters of the Privy Council, with a few other State Papers. A collection similar to Stowe MS. 160 and Add. MS. 32323, which include some of the same letters; cf. also Harley MS. 4943. Late 16th cent. (the dates of the original letters range from 1540 to 1590). Earlier letters are arranged by subject, examples of passports and safe conducts being followed by licences, warrants, and orders for the apprehension, punishment and examination of criminals. The remainder are of a miscellaneous nature, dealing mainly (from f. 40 onwards) with Irish affairs, and not in strict chronological order, though the bulk form a rough sequence from 1577 to 1583. Dates and names of addressees are often omitted. Some of the letters are not recorded in the Registers of the Privy Council as published in Proceedings and Ordinances of the Privy Council of England, ed. Sir Harris Nicholas, 1834-1837, and Acts of the Privy Council of England, ed. J. R. Dasent, 1890-1907. Three (ff. 18b, 19 and 67b) are wrongly dated 1576, 1573 and 1540, as according to the Register, they were written in 1552, 1552 and 1580 respectively. The names of all the correspondents are given in the Index to this Catalogue. Paper; ff. i + 219. Folio. Late XVI cent. Gatherings normally of 24 leaves. An early foliation indicates that a leaf (probably blank) has been torn out between ff. 156 and 157. On f. 219b is written twice the name 'Antony Asheley' [Antony Ashley, sworn a clerk of the Privy Council 1587; knt. 1596]. On f. 2 is an erased note of ownership, apparently reading 'R. Myddelton Massey M.D. S.R.S. 1713' [Richard Middleton Massey, M.D., F.R.S., F.S.A., d. 1743; cf. a similar note in Sloane MS. 2749, f. 203]. On f. 1, which also contains the beginning of an 18th cent. table of contents, is the note 'Given by Dr Midleton Massey to Mr J. Chicheley' [John Chicheley, of the Middle Temple, one of the founders of the revived Society of Antiquaries, 1717]. Cat. of Colbeck, Radford and Co., London, 1930, no. 39. From the Farnborough Fund.
