BREVIARY, of the use of Mâcon. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., vi, 1931-1932, PP. 7-8. Contents:-(1) Calendar, including, as well as numerous Lyons saints, St Vincent, patron of Mâcon cathedral (22 Jan., with octave; Invention, 23 Sept.); St Gerald, Bishop of Mâcon (29 May), and St Innocent (30 Oct., see V. Leroquais, Un Livre d'Heures Manuscrità 1'Usage de Mâcon, 1935, p. 8, also Les Bréviaires Manuscrits des Bibliothèques Publiques de France, 1934, ii, pp. 186, 193-194). A few 14th-cent. insertions are of no significance. ff. 1-6 b;-(2) Psalter (the Gallican version), with a few very brief liturgical directions. ff. 7-61;-(3) Canticles, etc. ff. 61-67;-(4) Litany. SS. Cyricus and Julitta, Benignus and Polycarp, follow immediately after St Stephen, protomartyr. ff. 67-69;-(5) Commune Sanctorum. ff. 69-89;-(6) 'In dedicatione ecclesie'. ff. 90 b-91b;-(7) Office for the feast of St Catherine (25 Nov.). Imperfect at the end. ff. 92, 92b;-(8) Temporale; first Sunday in Advent to second Sunday in November; from August onwards the Sundays are numbered separately for each month, followed by an office 'De sancta trinitate' (f. 337b), presumably for use on the last Sunday before Advent. Corpus Christi is not included. Rubrics for Sundays, etc., are in several places wanting or incorrect. Imperfect, wanting probably 20 leaves after f. 133 (Innocents' Day); a single leaf after f. 136; and 2 leaves after f. 219 (stubs of these are wrongly placed after f. 213). ff. 93-339b;-(9) Sanctorale, SS. Saturninus (29 Nov.)-Chrysogonus (24 Nov.), followed (f. 467b) by the Annunciation. Provision is made for an octave of the feast of St Vincent on 22 Jan., and the feasts of the Invention of Vincent (23 Sept., 9 proper lessons, f. 446), St Innocent (30 Oct., f. 453b) and a number of Lyons saints are included. Imperfect, wanting probably 10 leaves (27 Feb.1 May) after f. 375 (stubs of the last two are wrongly placed after f. 381 and f. 379 respectively). ff. 340-469;-(10) Plain-song settings for (a) the Venite, vv. 1, 2 (f. 470; eleven different settings) and (b) hymns for the office throughout the year (ff. 471 b, 478b), the major feasts of the Temporale and the Sanctorale (f. 472b), the dedication of the church (f. 476b), and the Commune Sanctorum (f. 477). The first verses (in some cases the first words) only are given, the full texts of most of the hymns appearing in other parts of the MS. At the end (f. 479) are two hymns to St Vincent (Chevalier, Repertorium Hymnologicum, nos. 2368 and 3095) and a hymn to St Mary Magdalen (ibid., no. 6593). ff. 470-479. Vellum; ff. iv+479 (ff. 171, 173, 206, 208, 434, 436 cancels; ff. 214, 215, 380, 382 stubs). 185 mm. x 140 mm. Second half of XIII cent. (St Peter Martyr, canonised A.D. 1253, is included in the calendar.) Gatherings mostly of 8 leaves (ill, xii'3, xviii wants all but the first, xix wants all but the last three, xx wants 1, xxiv' [4, 6 cancels], xxviii' [5, 7 cancels], xxix8 [7, 8 stubs, misplaced after 2], xxxiii, xlii, 1 [1, 2 Stubs, misplaced after 6, 71, lvii' [3, 5 cancels], lx12, lxii [last]2), with (after gathering xii) signatures and in most cases catchwords; whole gatherings are wanting probably after xii (f. 92) and after xviii (f. 133) and xlix (f. 375). Margins cropped, many signatures being partly or wholly defective. Double columns (except artt. 1, 10). Written in a number of hands. Headings and small initials in red; larger initials in red and blue, with rough pen-work. Brief notes and additions throughout in a variety of hands (13th-15th centt.). A fragment of a 14th-cent. deed used in the binding (ff. i, ii), relates to lands 'in finagio S. Gengulphi', i.e. St Gengoux (there are two localities of this name in the modern arrondissement of Macon). Vellum binding, with gilt tooling and title in gilt lettering on red leather label, executed probably for the Augustins Déchaussés de la Croix Rousse in the 17th cent. (see Cat. des MSS. de la Bibliothèque de 1'Arsenal, viii, p. 249). No. 12 in the catalogue of their MSS. (ibid., p. 250). Purchased from them, circ. 1713, by Thomas Hobart, M.D. (ibid., p. 261n.; see also The Library, 4th Ser., ii, 1922, pp. 221, 222), whose signature is on f. 1. No. 17 (cf. f. iib) in the list of Lord Mostyn's MSS. in Hist. MSS. Comm., 4th Rep., App., p. 347. Purchased by B.
