COLLECTION OF FROTTOLE, STRAMBOTTI AND ODES, with music for four voices, by Italian composers of the 15th and early 16th centt. The names of the composers are not given but a number can be identified from the books of Frottole printed by Ottaviano dei Petrucci at Venice, etc., 1504-1514, viz:-Francesco d'Ana (ff. 4 b, 6 b, 20b (?), 39 b, 46 b); Bartholomaeus Tromboncino (ff. 7b, 2ob (?), 22b, 26b, 42b, 57b); Marchetto Cara (ff. 24b-26); Philippo de Luprano al. Lurano (ff. 35 b, 41 b, 42 b (?), 54b, 55 b); Nicolaus Brocus (f. 38b); Jacobus Foglianus (ff. 48b, 53b); and Josquin Dascanio (i.e. josquin des Pres?) (f. 56 b). A further nine (ff. 2b, 9b, 10b, 12b, 21b, 40b, 48b, 52b, 58b) are there printed anonymously. A list of contents by Alfred Einstein with references to Petrucci's editions are given on typewritten sheets inserted at the beginning of the volume (ff. ii-iv). Modern editions of vols. 1 and 4 of Petrucci's Frottole by R. Schwartz have been printed in the Publikationen älterer Musik, viii, 1935 and Of vols. 1-3 by G. Cesari, R. Monterosso and B. Modern binding of red morocco, gilt-tooled, by (cf. inscr. f. v) Ottmann-Duplanil [of Paris] (cf. C. Ramsden, French Bookbinders, 1789-1848, 1950, p. 149). The following 16th-17th cent. notes of ownership occur at the beginning of the volume:-(a) 'Est Monasterii sanctissime Trinitatis De Florentia anno D. MDLXXXXXXX' (sic), (i.e. the Vallombrosan Abbey of Santa Trinita, Florence). In the same hand is written 'Alberto Duro [?Albrecht Dürer] Intagliatore' but the purpose of the entry is obscure. f. 2;-(b) 'Al mio confratello m[esser] fausto bandinelli'. f. 2;-
