INVENTORY OF CHARTERS OF REVESBY ABBEY, co. Linc., temp. Stephen-temp. Henry II, in roll form. Latin. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., vii, 1932-1933, pp. 66-68 and pl. xxviib, and G. R. C. Davis, Medieval Cartularies, no. 8og. The deeds are listed (with the total under each heading noted in the margin), as follows:-(i) On recto:-(a) Privilegia summi pontificis; (b) Carte regum; (c) Carte clericorum; (d) Carte comitum; (e) Carte baronum;-
and (2) On verso:-(f) Carte militum; (g) Cyrographa cum sigillo ad terminum; (h) Carte hospit. acomodate nobis. A chirograph of one deed listed under (c) is Harley Ch. 44. 1. i. 17th-cent. transcripts of others are in Add. MS. 6118, ff. 329b-331, and Lansdowne MS. 447, ff. 4-5b. Other inventories of deeds in roll form are Harley Roll. 5 (early 13th cent., from Kirkstead Abbey, co. Linc., and not Revesby, as stated in Brit. Mus. Quart., loc. cit., p. 67) and Add. Roll 19631 (late 13th cent., relating to Scottish dependencies of Reading Abbey, co. Berks). Vellum; 1 membrane. 586 mm. x 115 mm. xii cent. Double columns on recto, single on verso, with red rubrics. Acquired with Eg. Ch. 2117-2132, which relate to Robertsbridge Abbey, co. Suss., and may therefore once have formed part of the Penshurst archive, although not recorded in Penshurst MS. 1106, a 16th-cent. inventory of the deeds there (see Hist. MSS. Comm., MSS. of Lord De L'Isle and Dudley, i, 1925, pp. 302-3). The inventory came to the Museum in a box-cover (not preserved) lettered 'Vergilii carmina ... Codex membran.', stamped with the arms and monogram of the Rev. Theodore Williams, which perhaps contained lot no. 1802 of his sale-cat. of April 1823; but the roll is not listed there. See Brit. Mus. Quart., loc. cit., p. 68.
