Egerton MS 3060-3085

BRIDGEWATER AUTOGRAPHS: indices to most of the original sixty-seven volumes of the collection of Egerton manuscripts bequeathed to the British Museum by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (d. 1829), compiled circ. 1811-1824. Each index or set of indices is alphabeticallv arranged, but does not refer to any manuscript by number. A signed memorandum in the hand of Lord Bridgewater bequeathing his manuscripts to the library of Ashridge House appears at the beginning of most of the volumes (with the exception of Egerton MS. 3072, Egerton MSS. 3060-3075 bear on the pastedown of the upper cover the title 'Ashridge Collection'); of these memoranda those at the beginning of Egerton MSS. 3080, 3082, 3083 are dated Paris, 25 May 1811, and that at the beginning of Egerton MS. 3081 Naples, I Alar. 1813. In Egerton MS. 3076, f. 125, is a note relating to the location of the original MSS. in 1812 and July 1813 (Paris and Aix respectively). Several notes by Lord Bridgewater record the purchase of MSS. (e.g. from L. S. Augier, in 1811, Egerton MS. 3081, f. 3b; from [Charles Philip Campion], Abbé de Tersan, Egerton MS. 3081, f. 116; from F. N. V. Campenon, at Paris, 1811, Egerton MSS. 3076, f. 81b, and 3081, f. 26; from Count Firmian's sale at Milan the watercolours of James Bruce, the Abyssinian explorer, Egerton MS. 3077, f. 17b). Notes in the same hands as those in the present volumes also appear in memoranda on the letters in the original Egerton collection (e.g. Egerton MS. 15, Passim). Mostly French.
