SERMONS for Sundays throughout the year by Nicolaus de Aquaevilla al. Lugdunensis, Franciscan, in Latin. Beg. (f. 3, the first Sunday in Advent) 'Dicite filie syon [Matth. xxi. 5] ... verba ista sumpta sunt a Zacharia propheta'. The collection comprises the fifty-six sermons (nos. 2, 12 and 22 on texts from the Epistles, the remainder on texts from the Gospels) found in most MSS. and in all printed editions; it does not include the five
additional sermons (for Christmas, etc.) printed in M. Makerel's edition, Paris, 1519, or the four additional sermons (for Septuagesima, etc.) printed in the various editions of the recension of J. Quentin (see Histoire Littéraire de la France, xxxi, pp. 97-99). The last sermon is incomplete, breaking off, in the middle of f. 114, after the words 'loquar domino in tribulacione anime mee id est confitebor confitebor'. There is no title or colophon. For other MSS. of the collection and the little that is known of the author see Hist. Litt. de la France, xxxi, pp. 95-100, and J. H. Sbaralea, Supplementum ad Scriptores Trium Ordinum S. Francisci, Pars 11, 1921, p. 265. Vellum; ff. 122 (ff.26,28,115-122 cancelled).195 mm. x 130 mm. XIII cent. Sec. fol.'[forti]tudo queritur'.Double columns of 34 1ines. Written in France. Gatherings mostly of 8 leaves (i2, ii10, iii12 [6 and 8 cancelled], last 10 [3-IO cancelled]), with signatures. Small initials, etc., in red and blue, with rough pen-work. At f. 1 b is a late 13th-cent. list of the texts of the sermons, followed (ff. 1 b, 2) by notes (14th cent.) of the arguments of the first nineteen sermons. Some sentences from the last sermon are scribbled in a 15th-cent. hand on f. 114. Contemporary (?) binding (upper cover wanting) of stiff brown leather, without boards, with vertical rows of stamps, including birds in foliage, fleur-de-lis, panther and dragon (?), and Holy Lamb, and, on the spine, a shield with a lion (?) rampant. From the Farnborough Fund.
