REGISTER OF CRIMINAL CASES heard by Guillaume d'Esparron, judge-ordinary, 'in valle de foss' (now Fox-Amphoux, dépt. Var), on behalf of Reforciat de Castellane, seigneur of the Valley of Fox, La Vergière, etc. (see De la Chenaye-Desbois et Badier, Dictionnaire de la Noblesse, iv, 1864, 805); 23 April 1392. Latin. Written by Raymond (?) Girand, public notary of the court. Some of the entries have been deleted after payment or pardon of the fines and an appropriate marginal annotation made. The cases heard consist mainly of theft, robbery with violence, the bearing of arms and, finally, abusive language, some uncommon terms of which are quoted (ff. 3, 5b, 6) in the original Provencal. Endorsed (f. 14b) in a 16th or 17th cent. hand: 'Santances a la faueur de Bonifacii de castellain, s[ieur] de fos' and in a still later hand: 'tire dun sac sans coste darles' (Arles, dépt. Bouches-du- Rhône). See also Brit. Mus. Quart., ix, 1934-1935, pp. 34-6. Paper; ff. 14. 299 mm. x 217 mm. A.D. 1392. Watermark, f. II, of a twig in the shape of a Latin cross, closely resembling Briquet, Lesfiligranes, no. 5617. Cat. of Emile Saffroy, jeune, Paris, no. 46, July 1934, lot 32730. From the Farnborough Fund.
