Scope & Content:

Official and personal correspondence and papers of three generations of the Jomini-Onu families, represented by (1) General and Baron Antoine Henri Jomini (d. 1869), the writer on strategy, and his wife, (2) their younger son, Baron Alexandre Michel (d. 1888) and his wife, (3) their grand-daughter, Louise Petit de Baroncourt and her husband (married 1864), Michael Onu. Born in Payerne, Switzerland, 1779, Antoine Henri Jomini (Russian style, Henrikh Veniaminovich Zhomini), briefly designated hereafter General Jomini, entered the French service in 1798 and the Russian service in 1813. His papers, and those of his wife, are contained in the first three volumes (Eg. 3166-3168). The main part of the collection consists of the papers of Baron Alexandre Michel Jomini (Russian style, Aleksandr Henrikhovich Zhomini), hereafter called Baron Jomini (b. 1817), who entered the Russian Foreign Office, 5 Dec. 1835, and was promoted to First Counsellor and Redactor, 5 June 1856. From then onward he was a mainstay of the Department, on two occasions deputising in the absence of the Foreign Minister, 25 Apr.-25 Nov. 1875, 15 Aug.-23 Nov. 1879, and at a critical period, May-Dec. 1877, he accompanied the Foreign Minister to Bucharest. Among other distinctions he was appointed Privy Councillor, 1862, and Secretary of State, 1882. His official papers (Eg. 3169-3186, 3189-3195) are almost exclusively concerned with the Eastern Question from the Crimean War to the Russo- Turkish War of 1877-78 and its aftermath up to the time of his death. In addition to the political papers there are volumes of personal correspondence both of the Baron and the Baroness (Eg. 3196-3220). The Onu portion of the collection consists partly of the diplomatic and personal papers (Eg. 3187, 3188, 3222, 3229-3232) of Michael Onu, First Dragoman and (1878) Counsellor, of the Russian Embassy at Constantinople, and partly of his own and his wife's private correspondence (Eg. 3221, 3223-3228, 3233-3241). His papers have particular interest for the period prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey in 1877, and during the negotiations at San Stefano in 1878 when Onu was on special mission at Constantinople. The remaining two volumes of the collection consist of papers relating to the Smirnov family (Eg. 3242) and of papers in Turkish (Eg. 3243, now transferred to the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts).
