Correspondence and papers of the Seymour-Conway family, Earl and Marquesses of Hertford; 1760-1843. The members of the family principally concerned are:-(a) Francis Seymour- Conway, 2nd Baron Conway of Ragley, created Viscount Beauchamp and Earl of Hertford 1750, Earl of Yarmouth and 1st Marquess of Hertford 1793; -(b) Francis Seymour-Conway, afterw. Ingram-Seymour-Conway, eldest son of (a), styled Viscount Beauchamp 1750-1793 and Earl of Yarmouth 1793-1794, succeeded as 2nd Marquess of Hertford 1794, together with his second wife Isabella Anne, daughter of Charles Ingram, 9th Viscount Irvine, and mistress of George IV as Prince of Wales ('The Sultana');-(c) Francis Charles Seymour-Conway, only son of (b), styled Viscount Beauchamp 1793-1794 and Earl of Yarmouth 1794-1822, succeeded as 3rd Marquess of Hertford 1822, together with his wife Maria Emily ('Mie Mie'), b. 1771, legally daughter of the Marchese Giacomo Fagnani of Milan by his wife Costanza, but putative daughter of William Douglas, Earl of March, 4th Duke of Queensberry;-
(d) Richard Seymour-Conway, eldest son of (c), styled Viscount Beauchamp 1800-1822 and Earl of Yarmouth 1822-1842, succeeded as 4th Marquess of Hertford 1842, art collector. On the death of the last-named, the papers were inherited, with other papers, by his natural son, Sir Richard Wallace, Bart., founder of the Wallace collection. They afterwards passed into the hands of Wallace's secretary, Sir John E. A. Murray Scott, Bart. The names of all the writers of letters will be found in the Index to the present Catalogue.
