EPISTLES AND TREATISES OF ST JEROME and others, in Latin, with illustrations attributed to Michelino da Besozzo. Included are one hundred and twenty-six genuine letters of St Jerome (Migne, Patr. Lat., xxii; C.S.E.L. liv, lv, lvi) and nineteen of doubtful authenticity (Patr. Lat., xxx). Two genuine letters are copied twice: Epp. XV (ff. 27, 260b) and cxl (ff. 136 imperf. and 317). The collection closely resembles Harley MS. 3044 and, to a lesser degree, Harley MS. 3237 and Burney MS. 322. Other collections of Jerome's letters in the Museum are Royal MSS. 6 C. xi; 6 D. i; 6 D. ii; 6 D. iii; and Add. MS. 30051. In addition to Jerome's letters, the MS. contains:-

(19) Bachiarius, De Reparatione Lapsi ad Ianuarium Liber, here ascribed to St Jerome, but with a marginal note: 'Hec non est Hieronymi sed Bacharri [sic] Episcopi etestincompleta'[ends at c. 5]. Printed Patr. Lat., xx, 1037-1062. For this author, see Altaner, Patrologie, 5te Aufl., Freiburg i. Br., 1958, pp. 33B-4; and Joseph Duhr, Le "De Lapso" de Bachiarius, Louvain, 1934. Beg. 'Nisi uererer beatissime frater.' ff. 323b-324b. Vellum; ff. vi + 325. 350 mm. x 245 mm. Early xv cent.; the date 1414 appears on ff. 2b, 324b. Gatherings of 10 leaves (i12 with 2 insets; xxxi11), with catchwords. Double columns. Decorated penwash initials in red and blue occur throughout and occasionally painted floriated initials (ff. 11b, 12, 74, 132, 166, 227, 274, 293) embellished with gold; in addition there are nine historiated initials of medium size (ff. 18b, 62b, 68b, 97b, 113b, 191, 199, 253, 280b) and six on a large scale (ff. 8, 15, 107b, 126b, 145, 321b). The sketch of an archer shooting a stag on f. 8 and the miniatures on ff. 15 and 321b are probably the work of Michelino da Besozzo; the remainder are of Bolognese workmanship. (See Otto Pächt, 'Early Italian Nature Studies', Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, xiii, 1950, p. 14 n. 4, Pl. 6 A.) The manuscript was apparently executed for a member of the family of Cornaro of Venice, whose arms (party per pale, or and az.) together with the monogram 'I.C.' appear on f. 15. A bookplate (f. 1) is that of the Biblioteca nazionale di S. Marco, Venice, but the MS. is not listed in Zanetti's Catalogue of 1741. On f. ii is an undated note in a 20th cent. hand: 'To Darling Kaye with love from Harry. The second jewel.' Two pencil notes on f. iii record that the MS. was originally in the possession of the Cornaro family and later in that of the Marquis Costabili [al. Comestabili] of Bologna, and also state that the arms of the Cornaro family are stamped on the sides of the manuscript; the armorial stamp on the covers, however, in the shape of a cross within a circle, bears no resemblance to the Cornaro arms. F. iv formerly bore an inscription which has been thoroughly erased and does not respond to ultra-violet light.
