In prima describit Ieronimus auctorem'; see F. Stegmüller, Repertorium Biblicum Medii Aevi, iv, 1954, no. 6736, and J. Quétif and J. Echard, Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum, i, 1719, p. 615. ff. 2-28b.

(7) Commentary on St Matthew's gospel, beg. 'Cum multi scripsisse legantur evangelia soli quattuor evangeliste', ends 'gratia super gratiam et intellectus super intellectum'; cf. Monte Cassino MS. 238 (Bibliotheca Casinensis, iv, 1880, p. 281) and Bruges, Bibliothèque Publique, MSS. 56, 57 (A. de Poorter, Catalogue des Manuscrits de la Bibliothèque Publique de la Ville de Bruges, ii, 1934, pp. 75-76). ff. 122-144b.

C. Plummer, 1896, i, pp. 48-62); ends as in Bede, 'Hucusque responsiones beati pape Gregorii ad consulta reverentissimi antistitis Augustini'. For a discussion of the texts, principal MSS. and authenticity of the Responsiones, see M. Deanesly and P. Grosjean, 'The Canterbury Edition of the Answers of Pope Gregory I to St Augustine', Journal of Ecclesiastical History, X, 1959, pp. 1-49, and P. Meyvaert, 'Les "Responsiones" de S. End leaves (ff. iv, vii) and stubs (ff. 13, 164, 166, v, vi) from a late 8thcent. MS. written in minuscule in South Germany, probably at Freising, of parts of Sermons xciv and xc of St Leo the Great, corresponding to Migne, Patr. Lat., liv, cols. 460 A-B, 447 A-448 D: other parts of the same MS. are Add. MSS. 183O1, f. 1; 18304, ff. 2, 3, 100, 101; 18322, f. 2; 18344, f. 2; 18347, f. 2; 18349, f. 2; 18350, f. 150; Basle, Universitätsbibliothek, Fragm. I. 7; Donaueschingen, Fragm. B. III. 17; see E. A. Lowe, Codices Latini Antiquiores, ii, 1935, no. 168. The binding is 15th cent., calf on boards with brass studs, stamped with a broad diamond pattern and devices of flowers, etc. The MS. belonged, as did probably all the MSS. in which the foregoing minuscule leaves are found, to the abbey of St Georgenberg (transferred to Fiecht in 1706), diocese of Brixen, Tirol, for a history of which see P. Pockstaller, Chronik der Benediktiner Abtei St Georgenberg, nun Fiecht in Tirol, Innsbruck, 1874. At f. 1 is an erased late 17th-cent inscription of ownership, 'Monasterii Montis S. Georgii in Valle Oeni'. There is a set-off of the abbey press-mark, 'III. 108', at f. ivb, and another press-mark, B VII', in red gothic letters on a label on the front cover (f. i). On the front cover and f. 1 is written a 19th-cent inscription 'Barnheim', which does not, however, occur in any of the 43 St Georgenberg MSS. bought by the British Museum from the Berlin bookseller Asher in 1850 (see Cat. of Additions to the Manuscripts in the British Museum, 1848-1853, pp. 82-106 passim), many of which have bindings similar to that of the present MS. and red gothic pressmarks (cf., e.g., Add. MS. 18349). A cutting from a 19th-cent. German salecatalogue listing the contents of the MS. is pasted on the inside front cover (f. iii). Bought by Sir Henry Wellcome in London in 1904. Later belonged to the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, inventory no. 14418. From the Farnborough Fund.
