WELBY PAPERS. Official papers, including memoranda, printed material (partly fragmentary) and some correspondence, of Sir Reginald Earle Welby, G.C.B., Baron Welby 1894 (b. 1832, d. 1915), relating to expenditure on defence, mainly as Permanent Secretary of the Treasury 1885- 1894, but including a few papers of earlier date evidently collected by him; 1853-1895. The names of the writers of letters are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Paper. Folio. 1853-1895. At the beginning of the first volume are some general notes by Welby (f. iv) and (ff. v-vi) a list of contents of the collection as originally arranged by him. Part of the spine of the original binding, bearing the title 'Army and Defence 1895', has been preserved as f. i. Lot 31 in an unidentified sale (see f. ii). Later Wellcome Historical Medical Museum (inventory no. 68285). Arranged under subjects as follows:-
