CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA, or proof of gentility of blood, issued by Philip IV of Spain to Pedro Ruiz of Cenicero; Valladolid, 18 Dec. 1625. Spanish. Signed (f. 51b) by three of the Alcaldes of the Audiencia de los Hijos dalgo, viz. Alonso de Morale, Luis del Valle and Geronimo del Pueyo Araciel, and attested by the Notary. Followed (f. 52) by a notarial certificate of publication at Cenicero, 6 Jan. 1626. Paper and vellum; ff. 52. 290 mm. x 21O mm. A.D. 1625. Gatherings of 10 leaves (i12, iii8, vi2). The initials or first words of each section in gold on purple grounds. At the beginning are two full-page miniatures (with piece of green protective silk between) representing (f. 1b) the recipient and his family kneeling before the Virgin and (f. 2) a full achievement of the recipient's arms; on f. 50b is a small miniature of the King (also protected by green silk). Original contemporary brown leather binding, gold tooled, the design on both covers consisting of a central rosette (surrounded by crowned lions, etc.) within a decorated rectangular frame, with quarter-rosettes in each corner; remains of four silk ties. Attached by two twisted silk cords (one partly missing) is a leaden bulla, bearing, obverse, the King, full-face, with crown and in royal robes, holding sceptre and orb, seated on a carved throne with a semicircular back, between two pillars, etc., with the legend: 'Phillippus.IIII.D.G. Castellae.Legionis.Navarrae', and on the reverse, a shield of arms, quarterly, 1, 4 Castile, 2, 3 Leon, in point ente Granada, ensigned with a crown, with the legend: 'Phillippus.IIII.D.G.Castellae. Legionis.Navarrae.Granatae.Toleti.Galiciae.Hispalis.Corduvae.Murciae.Etc. Rex' (differing from Birch no. 23082). Belonged formerly to the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum (inventory no. 66498) (see f. 1).
