THANINGTON MANOR: transcript of charters, legal records, and other documents and memoranda relating to the descent, etc., of the manor of Thanington, co. Kent, made apparently by or for John Hales, Baron of the Exchequer, who acquired the manor in 1526; 1279-1528, with additions down to 1538. The original compilation is written in the same hand as, and apparently taken from, an identical but now less complete transcript, on paper, in Add. MS. 5506, ff. 94-108b; the latter appears in turn to have been compiled, at least in part, from some larger bound collection of transcripts, extending also down to 1528, whose foliation is referred to by it passim. The additions down to 1538 include some supplementary material for earlier periods. Vellum; ff. v + 15. Large quarto. Circ. 1528-1538. Belonged to Sir Charles George Young, Garter King of Arms (d. 1869; armorial bookplate, f. ii), Rev. Edmund McClure (d. 1922; see the letter from H. T. Mead, 1923, f. iv), and Frederick William Cock, M.D., F.S.A. (d. 1943; bookplate, f. iii). Sotheby's (Cock sale), 8 May 1944, lot 285. From the Farnborough Fund.
