NOTES OF ARMS AND MONUMENTS IN KENTISH CHURCHES by John Philipot (d. 1645), Somerset Herald, with many drawings of tombs and shields in trick. On Philipot and his MSS. see H. S. London, 'John Philipot, M.P., Somerset Herald, 1624-1645', Archaeologia Cantiana, lx, 1946, pp. 23- 54. ff. 3-5, 13-36, have been edited by C. R. Councer, 'A book of church notes by John Philipot, Somerset Herald', in A Seventeenth Century Miscellany, Kent Archaeological Society, Records Publication Committee, xvii, 1960, pp. 68-114; he suggests (p. 69), from similarities with J. Weever, Funerall Monuments, 1631 (e.g. the account of Challock, p. 278 [recte 280]; f. 22b of the present manuscript) that Philipot, like Weever, drew some of his information from papers of Robert Glover (1544-1588), Somerset Herald, Philipot's wife's uncle. A copy by Edward Hasted of ff. ix, 3-31, 35, 36, of the present manuscript (or of a copy of it; see Archaeologia, lxvi, 1915, p. 450) with some additional names, etc., now forms Add. MS. 5479, ff. 1-88, and an index by Joseph Foster to this copy is Add. MS. 39185. A similar but textually unrelated collection of arms and monuments in Kentish churches by Philipot forms Harley MS. 3917 and Add. MS 53782 (formerly Phillipps MS. 13121). At the beginning of the present manuscript are a list of contents by F. W. Cock (f. vi; see below) whose annotations occur throughout the manuscript and, in an eighteenth-century hand, a partial list of contents (ff. vii-viiib) and (f. ix) a title, 'Notes taken of Arms Monuments &c. in Severall Churches in Kent Anno 1603', the date being presumably a mistake for '1613'. Inserted material includes:-(a) portrait of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, engraved by M. Burghers, taken from Catalogus impressorum librorum bibliothecae Bodleianae, 1738, ii, p. 44. f. 2b;-(b) letter from William Henry St. John Hope (knt. 1914), to F. W. Cock, 26 Feb. 1901. f. 12;-(c) alphabets, etc., probably written as an exercise in court hand, 17th cent., and partly reproduced in Hasted's copy (Add. MS. 5479, f. 88). f. 31;-(d) 24 engraved coats of arms, probably of Kentish families, arranged in alphabetical order. f. 33. The original contents, mostly in Philipot's hand, are as follows:-
(1) Arms and monuments in Kentish churches, nearly all in the East of the county; the places are listed in the Index of the present Catalogue. Notes on ff. 3 and 19b are dated 20 Nov. 1613 and 20 Jan. 161,4/5. ff. 3-5, 13-23b.
(2) Arms, etc., copied in Canterbury Cathedral, viz.:-(a) 690 coats of arms (with 3 blank shields) from the roof of the cloister, with in some cases the name of the bearer added; the heading concludes 'Collected by me the second day of March Anno Domine [sic] 1613'. The manuscript has been used, and cited as 'C', by R. Griffin, 'The heraldry in the cloisters in the Cathedral Church of Christ at Canterbury', Archaeologia, lxvi, 1915, pp. 447-568, pll. xxxii-xli. ff. 6-11b;-(b) 28 coats of arms, of which the last 7 are headed 'ln the South end window These seven stand'. f. 11b;-(c) drawing of the tomb of Edward, the Black Prince. f. 12.
(3) Drawing, incomplete, of the tomb of Sir John Philipot (d. 1384), Lord Mayor of London, in the Greyfriars' church, subsequently Christ Church, Newgate Street (?). f. 24.
(4) 'Collections of Seuerall Monuments remayneing in the Cathedrall Church (of Christ) in Canterburie'; 18 Oct. 1624. ff. 25-30.
(5) Notes of arms 'In the Lord Moore's house at Sutton valence'. f. 35.
(6) Notes of arms and monuments 'In Heuer Church' and 'In the windows of Herne Hill Church 1642', followed by the heading 'ln Mr Cleybrokes house in Thanett. ff. 35b-36.
(7) Poems, viz.:-(a) 'Vpon One vsing to Brag of his Auncesters', 16 11. beg. 'The world Created God made Man'. f. 73;-(b) 9 ll., Latin and Engl., beg. 'Versus legales de Rosabella, hem, hem'. f. 73 b;-(c) 15 six-line stanzas on the Duke of Buckingham's expedition to the Ile de Ré in 1627, beg. 'The Duke from England lancht for France'. From the middle of stanza 10 the poem has been completed in a different hand, and it is signed at the foot 'J(?) Preston'. ff. 74-75;-(d) 6 11. on the monument of Sir Henry Lee, K.G.
(1530-1610), beg. 'Here Lyes the good ould kt. sr Harry'; the same lines are quoted by John Aubrey (Aubrey's Brief Lives, ed. 0. L. Dick, 2nd ed., 1950, p. 190). f. 75. Paper; ff. xvii + 81. Small folio. 1613-1642. Watermarks: ff. vii, viii, Britannia, similar to W. A. Churchill, Watermarks in Paper, 1935, no. 225, with countermark 'GR'; ff. ix-xvii, coat of arms similar to E. Heawood, Watermarks, Hilversum, 1950, no.366, with countermark 'GP'; ff. 1-30, 32-81, crozier with initials 'NCH', as Heawood, op. cit., no. 1199. Belonged possibly to Joseph Edmondson (d. 1786), Mowbray Herald Extraordinary and subsequently to Sir Frederick Augustus Talbot Clifford-Constable, 3rd Bart., of Tixall, co. Staff., on whose death it was bought (Sotheby's salecat., 7 Nov. 1899, lot 375) by Frederick William Cock, M.D., F.S.A. (bookplate, f. ii; signature, f. vi); after his death (1943) it was bought by the Society of Antiquaries (Sotheby's sale-cat., 8 May 1944, lot 168). 18th-cent. pressmarks occur on f. i ('Antiq & Her 32' and '7. J(?) 19') and f. 2b ('O: 28: 3'). Binding of brown leather, blind-stamped, 18th cent. From the Farnborough Fund.
